Republican U.S. Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho was arrested in December in Washington D.C. for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Chicago Tribune. A police officer stopped Crapo in Virginia after spotting a car running a red light. Crapo, 61, failed several field sobriety tests and his blood alcohol level was 0.11 percent, police said in a statement. The legal limit in Virginia is 0.08 percent.
Crapo was taken into custody and released on a thousand dollar bond. He said that he was “deeply sorry” for the DUI incident. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me,” Crapo said. “I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter.”
Crapo is a Mormon who has said that he does not drink alcohol at all. He has been a member of the U.S. Senate over ten years. The Republican senator was re-elected to Senate in 2010. He is also a member of the Senate Banking Committee and the chamber’s budget and finance panels. In 2011, he worked toward a deficit-reduction deal that Congress failed to adopt.
